First Snow: Week One

Hello again,

So I’ve made it past the half way mark of the trimester, now the real fun begins. I was given a list of things that I need to do before the end of the trimester and I am to come up with a way to get it all done. A good thing happened, I was approached by a game designer who invited me to join his current group of two, me making the third. We had a little chat, and decided that we should each come up with a quick rough game design document of a game idea by Saturday. Lucky for me, I had a game idea that I had written in a book at the start of the year sitting next to me, so I wrote bits of it up on the computer and showed the group. Having given a rough idea of what my game was before Saturday it was no surprise that the other game idea in the group happened to be very similar to my own. In the end we combined my game play with Rowan’s (Game designer) theme, and so started the beginnings of First Snow.

That was Saturday, I’m now in Tuesday writing a blog before I head off to Uni and our current game is looking really good. We have a movable character that can throw snowballs and die and also respawn (Thanks Rowan) and we also have a little Ai square that will follow the player and shoot snowballs at him when he is in the Ai’s line of sight. The Ai does have a default “scan” that it does when the player isn’t in his line of sight, but I’m still working on that. It seems that once the Ai sees the player it will stop his scan, and track, but when Line of sight is lost he will not return to his scan. Should be an easy fix, but we will see, making a mouse click should be easy, but that took me a couple of days.

And so that is where I’m at currently, I’m going to try and make these blogs more frequently, maybe one every 1-2 days, these blogs will be more me telling you all my problems with C#. Oh I almost forgot to talk about using Unity for the first time. It’s amazing, everything is so easy to do; you make a script and drag and drop and you are done, but for some reason it makes me feel like I’m cheating somehow.
